Purdue University is one of the first Land Grant Universities in the country. Located in West Lafayette, about halfway between Indianapolis and Chicago, this historic university is known world wide for its contribution to both agriculture and engineering. That tradition of excellence continues to this day.
The campus is rather sprawling, and as such at least a half a day should be allotted when you put Purdue on your agenda for travel plans. The Student Union Building is a site to behold, with its striking size, beautiful woodwork, and art and statuary scattered throughout. Of note are the bronze busts of each University President throughout the years. As is oft the case, one bust, that of Edward Elliott who served from 1922 to 1945, has become a good luck charm for students who rub his nose prior to any significant event.

Purdue has a very impressive “Entrance” Arch on the north side of the campus. Often called a focal point, this gift from an alumni class greets all: students, faculty and visitors.

Welcome to Purdue
Purdue is famous for its many contributions to the aerospace industry. Not the least of those accomplishments is the ‘producing’ of many astronauts that throughout the years have made significant impact on America’s Space Programs. Recently opened is the newest addition to Purdue: The Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. This magnificent edifice, with its stark design and multiple glass walls are a testament to Purdue’s continuing emphasis on space exploration and aerospace engineering. A sculpture of Neil Armstrong as a student is presented on a larger than life size bench in front of the building that now bears his name.
Make a trip to Purdue University a part of your itinerary the next time you are in Indiana. You will not regret doing so.
