I, Alex Cross by James Patterson starts with a family birthday party. This festive event is soon ruined by the proverbial phone call with the bad news about his long lost niece Caroline. It turns out Caroline has been working as a “high class” prostitute, and was brutally murdered. The brothel is hidden in the back woods of Virginia, and is a service provider for powerful politicians, businessmen, foreign dignitaries and the obligatory celebrities. Alex Cross is thrown into another mystery, with a villain named “Zeus”.

Five other young folks are also missing from the brothel. Cross is back in the role of the master detective in this offering by Patterson. The FBI is here to help, although there is some doubt as to the sincerity of some of the agents involved.

“Zeus” the killer is apparently well connected to the presidential administration. With this kind of influence available, the killer has many resources to thwart the investigation. The cover-up seems to backfire on “Zeus” as these additional murders only lead to more clues.

It is refreshing in this presentation by Patterson that the old “detective” in Alex Cross is back. Previous volumes have cast Cross in more of a supernaturally gifted persona, while surrounding characters have come across as less than brilliant, to say the least. It is nice to have straight detective work portrayed here.

The ending will be quite a surprise. The topic of sex, violence and sexual violence are portrayed in this book. Some of the imagery is somewhat hard to read, given the topic. The Cross family faces a personal crisis in the volume as well, as Nana is ill, and plays a rather large part in further character development. And as a teaser, Patterson cleverly leaves the reader with a few intriguing clues as to the future of our star Alex Cross at the very end of the book. Guess we will have to wait for the 17th Alex Cross book.

This is the 16th book in the Alex Cross series. It can, however, be read as a standalone. I recommend I, Alex Cross.
